In 1872 he graduated from Balliol College, Oxford, and embarked on a literary career, working as a journalist, essayist, and lecturer. He is the author of several books, including<i>Essays and Studies</i>(1895),<i>Essays in Poetry and Criticism</i>(1905), as well as volumes on Rousseau and Voltaire.</p></div>
