He was headmaster of Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, and later a professor at the University of Adelaide and the University of Melbourne. His most important work was the excellent resource<i>Austral English: A Dictionary of Australasian Words, Phrases, and Usages,</i> published in 1898.</p></div>
