Peter, an overworked asylum lawyer in NYC, is spending his days immersed in immigrants' struggles and returning to an empty apartment. When a young gay man's asylum case pierces his numbness, a catastrophic event from decades ago resurfaces. His mother Ann runs a women's retreat and is hurt by their estrangement. As Peter's case plunges him into memories of his first love and a night of violence, they must confront the secret that tore them apart.
