Mirbagheri traces the revival of Islamic/ist movements, and embarks on a theoretical study of some of the fundamental concepts in Islam and International Relations such as the self, Jihad, peace and universalism. Contemporary cases of conflict in the Middle East are analysed to pose a challenge to the universalist discourse of Western liberalism.

SM FARID MIRBAGHERI completed his secondary and higher education in the UK. He received his BA and PhD in International Relations from Keele University, England. He is currently a Professor of International Relations at the University of Nicosia, holder of the Dialogue Chair in Middle Eastern Studies (sponsored by the A.G. Leventis Foundation) and the executive director of the Diplomatic Academy (affiliated to the University of Nicosia).<BR>
