Outstanding Teacher award, 1983, School of Social Science Excellence in Teaching award, 1990, Lifetime Service award., Association Asian American Studies, 2005, Distinguished Editor award, The Council Editors of Learned Journals, 2008; fellow, National Endowment of the Humanities, 1992-1993.</p>
