The novelized biography of Moliere, based by Bulgakov on documentary evidence known to him, became, due to the personality of the main character and his aspirations, a work of a deeply personal nature - the writer narrated not only about Moliere, but also about himself. This is what delayed the arrival of the book to readers for a decade.
