As well as showing how ambassadors wielded influence in Washington and helped to formulate British foreign policy, it offers insights into the role of the embassy in modern diplomacy.

SAUL KELLY is Reader in the Defence Studies Department of King's College London, UK and the author of The Hunt for Zerzura: the lost oasis and the desert war. JOHN W. YOUNG  is Professor of International History at the University of Nottingham, UK and author of Twentieth Century Diplomacy: a study in British practice, 1963-76.
