When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Victoria Amelina turned from novelist to war crimes researcher, photographing ruins and recording testimonies of survivors and eyewitnesses to atrocities, writing what would become this book. Amelina died on July 1st 2023, aged thirty-seven, after a Russian cruise missile struck the restaurant at which she was dining with three writers. She left behind this honest and intimate account of the ravages of war and the cost of resistance.
