Autorenportrait
William Shakespeare (1564¿1616) William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, and baptized on April 26. Widely regarded as the greatest playwright in the English language, he wrote nearly 40 plays, over 150 sonnets, and several narrative poems that have shaped literature for more than four centuries. His works explore the full range of human emotion¿love, jealousy, ambition, grief, joy¿with language that still resonates today. His most famous tragedies, comedies, and histories, such as Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, and A Midsummer Night's Dream, are performed around the world. In 1582, at age 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and the twins Hamnet and Judith. By the early 1590s, he was active in London's theater scene as both writer and actor. He was a shareholder in the Globe Theatre and a member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. In his later years, Shakespeare returned to his hometown, where he died on April 23, 1616. He was buried in the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford. Though much of his life remains a mystery, his legacy endures¿in libraries, classrooms, on stage, and beyond.
