Autorenportrait

Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 ¿ November 28, 1859) was one of the first American writers to gain lasting fame both at home and abroad. Best known for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, he crafted stories that combined gentle satire, gothic mystery, and a deep affection for folklore and tradition. Born in New York City, the youngest of eleven children, Irving was named after George Washington, whom he met as a child. Though trained in law, his true passion lay in travel and storytelling. He spent many years in Europe¿especially in England and Spain¿where he worked as a diplomat and drew inspiration from local history and legend. During his time in Granada, Irving resided in the Alhambra palace, wandering its silent halls and collecting tales from the local people. The result was Tales of the Alhambra, a rich tapestry of myth, memory, and reflection that captured the spirit of Moorish Spain and remains among his most evocative works. Irving also cherished the traditions of Christmas, and his nostalgic holiday stories helped revive interest in old English customs during the 19th century. His Christmas writings exude warmth, festivity, and a wistful reverence for the past. He never married. The early death of Matilda Hoffman, the woman he loved, cast a lifelong shadow of quiet grief over his personal life. In his later years, Irving returned to New York and settled at his beloved estate, Sunnyside, along the Hudson River. He continued writing well into old age and died peacefully at 76. He was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, not far from the village he made immortal. Irving's legacy endures in the humor, atmosphere, and timeless imagination of his stories¿tales that continue to enchant readers and listeners across generations.
