It focuses on African-American soldiers during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It details "the services of the Colored Patriots of the Revolution". Among other patriots mentioned are Crispus Attucks, the first person killed in the Boston Massacre; Peter Salem, who was instrumental in the victory at Bunker Hill; and Prince Whipple, who participated in George Washington's noted crossing of the Delaware. The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution is considered by some to be the first history book by and about African Americans that is based on written documentation.

William Cooper Nell (1816¿1874) was an African-American abolitionist, journalist, publisher, author, and civil servant of Boston, Massachusetts, who worked for the integration of schools and public facilities in the state. Writing for abolitionist newspapers The Liberator and The North Star, he helped publicize the anti-slavery cause. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (1811¿1896) was an American author and abolitionist. She came from the Beecher family, a religious family, and became best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, which depicts the harsh conditions experienced by enslaved African Americans.
