'The Profiteers' is a fiction novel set in the London business community. John Wingate and Peter Phipps are bitter rivals, both personally and in business. So when Wingate hears that Phipps is buying up more stock in the B& I Granaries company, he flies in from New York, determined to frustrate his business prospects. Meanwhile Wingate becomes more and more interested in the apparently neglected Lady Dredlinton, whose husband is invested in the deal with Phipps.
