"The Castle of Otranto" is a novel by Horace Walpole, generally regarded as the first gothic novel. In the second edition, Walpole used the word "gothic" in the subtitle "A Gothic Story." The story is set in a haunted castle. The events develop in the spirit of medievalism and terror, which became a standard mod for the genre ever since.
